Black History Month Programs at Castleton University
Castleton, VT (02/14/2019) — Castleton University honors Black History Month with film screenings, discussions, presentations, and more. The series, "Race Matters: A Castleton Dialogue" touches on race, racism, and historical perspectives. All events are free and open to Castleton students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Study Group
This event is for anyone who is looking for ways to learn or teach about topics of race and racism, as well as the experiences of people of color. The study group will be held in the Library Media Center Viewing Room. Friday, Feb. 15: Discussion of possible sources for self-study (12 p.m.) Tuesday, Feb. 19: Introduction of chosen sources for self-study (5 p.m.) Tuesday, March 5: Sharing of sources read/viewed over break (5 p.m.) Friday, March 8: Sharing of sources read/viewed over break (12 p.m.)
"Green Book" Film Screening
Castleton will host two screenings of "Green Book" on Friday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. in Jeffords Auditorium. The film is about an Italian-American from the Bronx who is hired to drive a world-class African-American pianist on a tour from Manhattan to the deep south, relying on "The Green Book" to guide them to the few establishments that were safe at that time for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger, as well as unexpected humanity and humor, they are forced to set aside their differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

Disrupting Inequities in Education Presentation
Superintendent of Rutland City Public Schools Adam Taylor will discuss his experience with race, what educators are doing to promote diversity, and how individuals can educate themselves about racism and diversity. This discussion will take place on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m. in Jeffords Auditorium.
