Wood Named NAC Pitcher of the Week

2017 May 3

After helping her team to a 5-1 record in North Atlantic Conference play on the week, Castleton softball's Kayla Wood has been named the conference's Pitcher of the Week, as announced on Monday afternoon.

Wood was dominant once again this week, racking up a 3-0 record over three starts in conference action. The senior made four appearances on the week, tossing 20.0 innings and striking out a staggering 31 batters. She allowed just one earned run in her time in the circle, good for a 0.35 ERA, and finished the week by throwing 13 consecutive scoreless innings. Wood opened the week with a win on the road over the NAC's third-ranked team, Thomas, going the distance and striking out six in a 3-2 victory. She allowed just one earned run in the last inning of play, and scattered seven hits without walking a batter. On Tuesday against Lyndon, Wood carried a perfect game into the fourth inning, finishing the game with eight punch outs in 4.0 solid innings of work with just one hit allowed. In Castleton's biggest games of the season, Wood stepped up her game, working 9.0 scoreless innings over two appearances against Husson. She opened the day with yet another dazzling performance, as she was perfect for 4.1 innings before allowing a base hit-one of just two hits she allowed on the day. She struck out 15 batters in the complete-game win, as the Spartans topped Husson 1-0 in the opener. In game two, she came into the game in the sixth inning, working two scoreless innings to close the game and keep Castleton within striking distance in a narrow defeat to the Eagles. In all, she struck out 17 batters on the day and allowed just five runners to reach base in nine innings.

Her 0.75 ERA in conference action ranks second overall, and is best out of pitchers with more than 20.0 innings pitched. She now tops the conference in strikeouts during NAC play, and is second in strikeouts overall this season among NAC pitchers
