Shelley Van de Weert Named Castleton College Mentor of the Week

2014 Mar 19

Castleton College student Shelley Van de Weert was recently named the Castleton College Mentor of the Week.

A Bristol resident and Social Work major, Van de Weert joined the Castleton College Mentoring Program during the fall semester of 2013 in addition to her role as Vice President of the Social Issues Club and member of the Christian Fellowship Group. The Castleton College volunteer mentoring program matches Castleton undergraduates with local fourth and fifth grade students from the Castleton Village School. During weekly informal meetings throughout the academic year, the college student role models provide social support and encouragement for the children to aspire to attend college.

"We wrote to each other over the summer," said Van de Weert, who notes that the two share a special bond that will last well into the future. "I've discovered that I've become more empathetic and that I have become more approachable as a person."

Van de Weert recommends this program to any college student interested in being a role model for an elementary school student partner.
