2015 Feb 5

Kevin Alberque of Ridgefield Park, was one of 13 Castleton student athletes recently named to the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) All-Academic Team for his dedication and commitment in the classroom and on the field.

Veterans Kevin Alberque, Jonah Taylor and Brett Denning received this honor for the second consecutive season along with first-time recipients: Mark Alberque, Isaac Bendavid, Darren Callan, Dean Halbohn, Chris Manjuck, Christian Procida, Trevor Sayers, Jordan Stone, Tyler Sturtevant and Soren Pelz-Walsh.

Castleton's 13 All-Academic Team selections was tied with Husson and Norwich for the most in the ECFC. The 13 is also tied for the most in program history. Kevin Alberque was Castleton's lone senior representative after having a standout final season for the Spartans in which he was named the ECFC Offensive Player of the Year. The senior led the conference in receptions (53), yards (861) and all-purpose yards per game (165.8) while finishing with six touchdowns. He also was the only player in the nation to compile more than 200 rushing, receiving, punt return and kick return yards this season. This marked the third time in his career that Kevin Alberque has been named to the ECFC All-Academic Team. He is also a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District Selection.

Denning headlined Castleton's four junior selections, as he was named to the ECFC All-Conference Second Team. The two-time honoree recorded 60 tackles on the season with three sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. Taylor appeared in three games on defense last year, while first-timer Bendavid played in five games with seven tackles and one recovered fumble. Pelz-Walsh, meanwhile, compiled 21 receptions for 242 yards and two touchdowns in ten games.

Rounding out the Spartan selections were eight sophomores, including Callan, who was named to the ECFC Honorable Mention list. Callan finished the season with 82 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions. Mark Alberque was the team's starting long snapper and recorded five solo tackles this season while Procida averaged 2.4 tackles per game as a defensive back. Fellow defensive back Sturtevant made six appearances with four tackles for Castleton. Halbohn and Stone each lined up on the offensive side of the ball, while Sayers and Manjuck appeared on defense.
