Kayla Wood Named NAC Player and Pitcher of the Week

2016 Jun 1

After helping lead her team to its first-ever North Atlantic Conference Championship, Kayla Wood, of E Dummerston, VT, earned two of the final weekly awards given by the conference, as announced on Monday.

Wood was named both Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week after a dominant weekend for Castleton, going 2-0 and picking up a save over three appearances and earning NAC Tournament MVP honors. Wood struck out 24 batters over 16.2 innings of work to lead the Spartans to their first-ever NAC Title and allowed just seven hits and one earned run in the process. In game one of the tournament against Husson, Wood tossed a complete game as Castleton edged the seven-time defending champions, 2-1. She struck out 10 in the victory and allowed just two hits and one run. In the tournament's fourth game, Castleton and Thomas faced off in a battle of tournament unbeatens, with Wood working 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings for the save. She allowed just one walk, while striking out three. Wood had a second chance at Thomas in the NAC Championship game, and she delivered, going the distance to lead the Spartans to victory. Her 11 strikeouts marked the fifth time she reached double digits on the season, and she allowed just five hits in seven innings with a lone unearned run.
