Kalm Tabbed NEHC Rookie of the Week

2017 Jan 17

CASTLETON, Vt. - On the heels of her first career win over nationally-ranked UMass-Boston on Saturday, freshman Alexis Kalm of the Castleton women's ice hockey team has been named New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Rookie of the Week. In a rematch of last season's NEHC semifinal matchup, Kalm gathered 24 saves, including nine in the final period with the game on the line to preserve a 2-1 win over No. 9 UMass-Boston on Saturday at Spartan Arena. The freshman kept the high-powered Beacons off the board for 51 minutes before they struck on the power-play to cut it to a one-goal game. Kalm was solid the rest of the way, becoming just the second goaltender all season to hold the Beacons under two goals. The win came at a crucial time for Castleton, which had been shutout in back-to-back games. The Spartans improve to 5-15-1 all-time versus the Beacons, with all five of those wins coming in the past six seasons.

The Aberdeen, N.C. native is averaging 2.01 goals allowed per game and has a .920 save percentage to support her 1-1-0 record in two career starts. This is the second consecutive week a Castleton goaltender has earned a weekly award, as Rachael Brazil was the recipient of the NEHC Goaltender of the Week honor last week. Castleton (3-4-0, 3-3-0) will take on No. 1 Plattsburgh State on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup with the three-time defending national champions at Spartan Arena at 7 p.m.
