Arielle Ferrell Awarded Castleton University Robert Johnson Fellowship in Philosophy

Castleton University student Arielle Ferrell was recently awarded the Robert Johnson Fellowship in Philosophy for the 2016-17 academic year.

The Philosophy faculty has identified Ferrell as the most deserving junior or senior in the program based on excellence in and commitment to philosophy, and promise as a philosopher.

The Robert Johnson Fellowship in Philosophy is awarded each year to the most deserving junior or senior philosophy major. The recipient of this $1,000 award will have a GPA of at least 3.3 in the major, and will be pursuing an academic path to which philosophy is integral, probably with a plan to enter graduate school in philosophy. Although financial need will be a consideration, the winner must demonstrate a commitment to the coursework of the major, and to philosophy itself. The winner must also exemplify philosophical abilities in both discussion and written work, and show promise as a philosopher.

The recipient will be selected by a committee of faculty who teach courses in the major, and chaired by the Philosophy Program Coordinator.

Robert Johnson taught Philosophy at Castleton from 1986 until 2015. He founded the Philosophy Major, authored a major text in Logic, served on the board of the Vermont Council on the Humanities, the Vermont Ethics Network, and the Ethics Committee of the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
