Ariel Mroz-Brewer Named Castleton College Mentor of the Week

2014 Mar 18

Castleton College student Ariel Mroz-Brewer was recently named the Castleton College Mentor of the Week.

A Ilion resident and Sports Administration major, Mroz-Brewer was awarded this distinction by fellow Castleton mentors for the extraordinary encouragement and support she provided to a local fifth grade student during weekly informal meetings. The Castleton College volunteer mentoring program matches Castleton undergraduates with local fourth and fifth grade students from the Castleton Village School. During weekly informal meetings throughout the academic year, the college student role models provide social support and encouragement for the children to aspire to attend college.

"We shared the same interest in sports and I used that interest to bond with my mentee and encourage her to refine her social skills," said Mroz-Brewer, adding that the her fifth grader attended and cheered at her final field hockey game.

Mroz-Brewer predicts that the two will share a lifelong friendship and she recommends mentoring programs to any college student interested in being a role model for an elementary school student partner.
